The Other Side Of Britpop Vol. 4

The penultimate mix in the Brit-Pop B-Sides series which has been relatively difficult to keep a lid on – it’s easy to forget the sheer amount of music from this period.

“Streets Are Paved With Tarmac” by the great Silver Sun will shake off the winter blues for you – such a catchy song and proof that they really had tunes to spare. I remember finding it difficult to believe they came from the UK – figured they were Californian such is the strength of its influence in their sound.

“Harry Dean” is a fantastic tune from the great “Animals That Swim” – from their “Pink Carnations single – just total dreamlike beauty. This track is taken from their Pink carnations EP which was one of the great singles from this period – a marvellous band that got overlooked – please check them out as they really deserve a re-evaluation.

Finally, picking a Puressence B-Side was very very difficult as any Puressence fan will tell you listening to the albums is really only hearing half of the band – their B-sides would frequently outshine their lead singles which is phenomenal considering just how good those songs are. In the end I opted for “All Star” as it rips along a cracking pace – my brother turned me onto Puressence which pleases him immensely as it ensures he usually wins the long running debate about who discovered the best bands…to be fair he has a lot more up his sleeve.
