This album was released in 1990 and bridges the gap between the bands Fontana debut (Butterfly) and the great "Babe Rainbow" album. The album is basically a compilation of B-Sides and unreleased takes of session tracks for the Fontana album - kind of like "Barbed Wire Kisses" by the Mary Chain and this is equally as good. OK, this album does have a couple of instrumentals which will either please or grate depending on your mood however, out of the 14 tracks there are more than enough pieces of brilliance to make this an essential album for your collection. "Safe" is a a cracker and was considered to be a single of the band's - likewise "Marble" really should have made the Fontana album - one of my personal favourites is "Ray" which is among the finest songs the band ever put out - you can hear that the band must have loved those chords as it forms the instrumental "Love IV". Other notable highlights are "D Song '89" which edges towards "Love In A Car" territory and "Soft As Fire" which again is just a brilliant piece of music that could have sat on any album easily. Simply put if you enjoyed the House Of Love's "Butterfly" album then you must have this as well for it forms the perfect listening companion to it's better known big brother - you never know there may be a few on here that become your new favourites.01. Safe
02. Marble
03. D Song '89
04. Scratched Inside
05. Phone
06. Cut The Fool Down
07. Ray
08. Love II
09. Baby Teen
10. Love III
11. Soft As Fire
12. Love IV
13. No Fire
14. Love V

If my memory serves me - this album scored 8-9/10 in nearly every music magazine - those that didn't like it were obviously high... this band should have been huge - it still bothers me that they weren't then again they say you never really appreciate greatness until it is gone - perhaps the history books will capture the band's importance and legacy better than the charts ever did...

Thanks for posting this album. :)
If i remember rightly, most of the best songs on here were supposed to make up the band's second "proper" album, until Guy Chadwick got cold feet and scrapped it. Daft behaviour. Pity they never sounded as good as this again. . .
Thanks so much for this, G!
thanks man! are you familiar w/ their cover of 'i can't stand it' by the velvet underground? been searching for so long, can't find it. d'you have it? please post.
cheers!
Yeah - amazing that Chadwick can scrap such good songs - obviously must have seen value in them to release them - top quality band!
Kurt - I think I may have this - It was a B-Side to "I Don't Know Why I Love You" which I think I have lying about somewhere - I'll see if I can find it for you...
Ah, this is brilliant - thank you so much. I used to have this on vinyl, but there were so many songs on it, the sound quality was awful. "Love IV" is one of my favourite tracks ever, such an amazing sound. The book "My Magpie Eyes Are On The Prize" tells the Creation story and goes into depth about how the HOL made a complete fist of their career. What a shame.
ha - great to see this posted. i was (am) a HUGE fan of this band and (think) i have everything they ever recorded. saw them live in atlanta, ga in 1990. i even put together a ridiculously comprehensive 2-disc retrospective for my buddies a few years back - complete with cover art and liner notes. what can i say? i'm love these guys...
Nice one DJ - they were(are) such a brilliant band - I thinkI have most of their stuff however I am missing a few bits and pieces but in the whole they just seemed incapable of producing a bad track...
Yes, thanks a lot, the only album missing from my HoL-collection, and a great one as well.
I would be very interested in their version of I Can't Stand It, too.
Hi folks, has anyone out there got a copy of the doors cover they could share:
'spy in the house of love', a track I think was released as the B side of one of the 12" of 'I dont know why I love you", same goes for 'I cant stand it' as previously requested!
Ive probably got the vinyl buried in storage in the UK, but Im not there!
PS, if there is anything else HOL you are after let me know and I may be able to help.
