Catherine Wheel Single #1 – She’s My Friend 1991

This is the first release by the mighty Catherine Wheel – this was released on the Wilde Club Records label and was/is a pretty hard record to obtain – I was fortunate enough to pick up one of the first pressing which was limited to 1000 copies. Tracks one and four are the original recordings – they were later revamped for the first album “Ferment”.

Catherine Wheel were sometimes considered Shoegaze and certainly “Salt” on this EP treads that ground, however they were a lot heavier than the likes of “Lush” and “Slowdive”. This EP shows them at their raw best – She’s My Friend was always a favourite of the fans – I remember it appearing on BBC2’s “Snub TV” back then and everyone loved it. “Upside Down” and “Wish” show a young band blasting out confident melodic guitar tunes in a similar vein. They got better after this too – The Painful Thing EP soon followed and then of course “Black Metallic” – which every American college student of the early 90’s will be able to recite verbatim.

Listen if you like: Ride, MBV, Swervedriver et al.
