The Stairs – Mexican R ‘N’ B [1991]
One of the greatest “lost” bands of the 90’s. This fantastic band from Liverpool were one of the coolest around – everyone should own a copy of “Weed Bus” single and have it framed on their living room wall. Their album while being a little over produced was still streets ahead of the other bands at the time – although The Stairs were obviously heavily immersed in their 60’s music they brought their brand of scouse Beefheart/Stones madness screaming into the 90’s. Unfortunately, their second album remains unreleased which is a crime – good to see Edgar Jones doing well at the minute with his solo work – talent shines on!
The NME stated this: "startling debut, triumphantly free of creative compromise and without the slightest whiff of the wannabe commercialism that has tinted so many debut releases".

Hi,
Just a note to say how much i love this site virtually all the music on here is stuff i love i am getting stuff i only have on Record or tape onto CD and also stuff i wanted but never had. Its doing my girlfreinds head in me gettin exited about the daily download. Two requests firstly can you share the hosting so tight arses like me without premium accounts dont have to wait 2 hours between downloads and also more info on the Spinning Jennys I saw a bad called that years ago in Norwich and wondered if they were the same band?
Oh and i had forgotten how great the High were.
Keep on Keepin on!
James

Simon
Hi,
i used to love this group,
you're right, personally, i've got my own copy of "weed bus" (i think about another similary group, do you remember The Shoulders with "trashman shoes" ?). this record is excellent all produced in "mono", they were the only group in Liverpool (and in the world) to be as "roots" as the La's !!!
Yes - I remember the Shoulders - I have that album "Trashmans Shoes" - very very good it is too! Were they not American?
Jim - thanks for the f/b - I changed to RS casue a few people said they couldn't download from Megaupload - unfornately - I will be using it for a while yet as I have bought a premium account and Sharebee is a pain to upload on. Maybe in the future I'll mix it up a little. The Spinning Jennys are from Norfolk so it may have been them - don't know too much else about them - only managed to get one single by them - not sure what else they did! Keep doing the girls head in Sir!!
I requested this album last week I think, so I am delighted to find it, thanks again. The first time I heard this band was in 1992 watching 'Superchannel' videos and was amazed by 'Weed Bus', sounded like the wildest Mick Jagger fronting 'The Who', another song that could have been huge in 95-96, could have done for them what 'The Riverboat Song' did for Ocean Colour Scene. Thanks again,
Fernando
By the way, there are several bands called Spinning Jennys:), but I don´t think these are the band that jim saw in concert:

This is all I can find on them - I remember finding a page ages ago but I can't locate it now!

Couldnt place this band till I saw the album cover. Now I remember, thanks once again!
thanks for this great album.
by the way, you could upload something of "Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine", please my friend.
thanks
('.')
Some Carter - yes I have some Cesar - will post some up soon!
OMG and every type of exclamation used by the kids today.
Been looking for this for a while, I had this twice but one was stolen the other went missing and didnt want to pay up to £25 on Ebay.
Best debut album of the 90's imo
I missed out on owning this first time 'round (I remember Peel playing a couple of tracks) & had to rely on a crummy cassette dub for a long time. Fantastic LP though!
Now then, didn't you mention a 2nd unreleased LP elsewhere on your blog? Don't 'spose...? IBx
thanks..... I first heard of these when Edgar played with weller. Saw him last year.....good concert.
